We met Aurelio Villatoro by chance. After three flights, including a very bumpy one high into the mountains in Huehutenango, a political protest had shut down the main road. This meant our scheduled ride would have to drive the long way to pick us up, giving us a few hours to wait at the tiny single building airport. One phone call to Aurelio and those plans changed. He dropped what he was doing to pick us up and take us to an amazing lunch with the best local food while we waited for our ride. We weren't scheduled to visit Aurelio or try his coffee, but his hospitality blew us away. It turns out, in addition to being an incredible last minute host, Aurelio grows amazing coffee on his farm, Finca La Esperanza. The coffee from this farm is packed with our favorite combination of stone fruit and chocolate notes, while having the perfect balance of sweetness, balance and acidity. It tastes amazing as filter coffee, espresso and cold brew. The multi generation growing and processing knowledge of the Villatoro family, the high elevation of Huehuetenango and the carefully selected varietals result in an amazing coffee that we have been enjoying for years.
